LAUNCHING CAREERS
AND GROWING
OPPORTUNITIES

Launching in 2024, the Alternative is a South Australian program changing how people start their careers.

Over 18-months, a pool of graduates will be connected with three paid industry placements, spending six months at each to thrive and make connections with leading SA industries, among fellow leaders.

These graduates will gain real-world experience, an abundance of growth and be part of a graduate community.

THREE PLACEMENTS. REAL EXPERIENCE. FAST-MOVING INDUSTRIES.

THE BENEFITS FOR GRADUATES

The three rotations, spanning an exciting 18 month period, are designed to keep participants engaged, challenged and motivated.

They’ll help graduates identify and explore their skills across a variety of roles and projects; helping them to identify what type of work they enjoy most, or are best suited to.

The Alternative will provide graduates with:

  • Unique rotations between employers
  • Exposure to emerging SA Industries
  • Professional development and networking opportunities
  • Inspiring mentors and career coaching

THE BENEFITS FOR BUSINESSES

The Alternative provides SA businesses with a new way to access graduate talent.

As a structured program, graduates have the capability to undertake exciting projects for your organisation, injecting fresh perspectives, innovative ideas and practical solutions. In the process, you may even identify the next leaders within your business.

The Alternative will provide employers with:

  • Access to South Australia’s best young talent
  • A cost effective and time efficient way to bring new resources into your organisation
  • New perspectives and ideas
  • Fully-scalable involvement

HOW IT WORKS

The Alternative is an exciting initiative of the Government of South Australia. It offers South Australian businesses access to a pool of talented graduates on a paid rotational placement basis.

  1. Eligible graduates apply to be part of The Alternative’s graduate pool, and SA businesses register their interest in joining The Alternative’s employer panel. This process is managed by the Department of the Premier and Cabinet (the Department).
  2. Businesses in the employer panel are provided with access to the graduate pool, which will be facilitated by a Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO) provider.
  3. The RPO provider engages directly with businesses, and is responsible for the day-to-day assessment, selection, and rotational placement of graduates into businesses, as well as for employment matters including line reporting, performance management and payroll.
  4. Businesses will make simple payments to the Department for participation in the program, and to the RPO for the salaries and entitlements of the graduate participants.
The Department will provide ongoing support for program participants, including relevant training to eligible SA businesses.
